Luanne Metz was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Varsity on May 29, 2023.
She is currently a member of the Special Standing Committee on Members’ Services.
Dr. Metz is an accomplished neurologist and has worked in the medical field in various capacities for over 30 years. She has held several positions within Alberta Health Services including, director of the Calgary Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, section of neurology head, and research director. She has also been a professor in different capacities with the University of Calgary, most recently as an Emerita professor. In 2020, Dr. Metz acted as the associate facility medical director for the Foothills Medical Centre.
Along with her busy work schedule, Dr. Metz found time to volunteer in her community. She is the founder of Eyes Forward Alberta (2020 to 2021), was the neurology representative and academic representative for the Alberta Medical Association, and the founding president of the Canadian Network of MS Clinics.
Dr. Metz has contributed to, and created, over 250 publications over the span of her career, dedicating the vast majority of her research to discovering more about Multiple Sclerosis, and how to treat it.
Among her many honours and awards, Dr. Metz was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2020. She received the Medal of Distinguished Service from the Alberta Medical Association in 2015, the Watanabe Distinguished Achievement award from the University of Calgary (Faculty of Medicine) in 1999, and a Calgary Women of Achievement award from YWCA Calgary in 2001.
Dr. Metz was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She obtained her medical doctorate from the University of Calgary and went on to study internal medicine at the University of Toronto. She completed her neurology residency at the University of Calgary and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1988. She completed a fellowship in multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology in 1989.
She has two children, and loves spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, playing board games and traveling.
She was the 969th Member to be sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
