Assistant Opposition Whip
Janis Irwin was re-elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as the representative for the constituency of Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood on May 29, 2023.
She served as the Official Opposition Deputy Whip and Critic for Women and LGBTQS+ issues.
MLA Irwin previously served on the following legislative committees:
- Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Past Chair)
- Select Special Committee to Examine Safe Supply
- Standing Committees on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, Families and Communities, Alberta’s Economic Future, and Private Bills
Prior to serving with the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, she worked as the director of stakeholder relations with the Premier’s office.
She devoted over a decade to the field of education, where she worked in rural Alberta as a high school teacher and as a vice-principal. Outside of the classroom she worked for Alberta Education as the senior manager, social studies and as the executive director for high school curriculum.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree in education from the University of Calgary.
Over the years MLA Irwin has served as a board member for several nonprofit associations, including the Somali Canadian Women and Children Association, the Highlands Historical Society Edmonton, and Arts on the Ave. She has also volunteered with a number of organizations, including the Boyle McCauley News, Homeward Trust and the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers.
MLA Irwin is a proud resident of the Parkdale neighbourhood in Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood. She enjoys an active lifestyle and enjoys spending her spare time running and biking.
She was the 910th Member to be sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
