Nagwan Al-Guneid (Naj-wan Al-Jun-aid) was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Glenmore on May 29, 2023.
She is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship.
Before being elected, Ms. Al-Guneid was the director of Business Renewables Centre Canada. Prior to that, she held various roles at Energy Futures Lab, TotalEnergies, and the University of Calgary between 2006 and 2020.
She has received several awards for her excellence in business, including the Top 50 Business Changemakers in Canada (Globe and Mail), Top 40 under 40 (Avenue Magazine Calgary), and the 2020 Young Women in Energy award (Young Women in Energy).
Ms. Al-Guneid has been very active in her community, most recently as a cofounder and board member of the Next 30 initiative. She was also a public member of the City of Calgary’s Biodiversity Advisory Committee, president of Ask Her YYC and a volunteer with new refugees for the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society.
Ms. Al-Guneid graduated from the University of Calgary, holds a bachelor of arts in communications and obtained her master of science in sustainable energy development. In 2015, she published her master’s thesis titled Addressing Climate Change through Collaboration between the Public and Private Sectors.
Born in Ta’iz, Yemen, Ms. Al-Guneid now lives in Calgary and enjoys biking with her children, hiking in Alberta’s glorious Rocky Mountains, listening to music and reading. She loves watching sports, as she grew up playing soccer, badminton, volleyball and handball.
Ms. Al-Guneid is proud to be the first Arab woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
She was the 984th Member to be sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
