The Office of Parliamentary Counsel provides comprehensive and non-partisan legal and legislative drafting services to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and other presiding officers, Members of the Legislative Assembly and the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly. Lawyers in the Office of Parliamentary Counsel also act as the Legislative Assembly Office’s in-house legal team.
The Office of Parliamentary Counsel is seeking a law student from May to August 2025. Some of the work that the successful candidate may be asked to do includes the following:
- conducting research in a variety of legal areas, including parliamentary procedure and practice, constitutional law, contract law, leasing, employment law, information access and privacy law, and intellectual property law;
- assisting in the review and preparation of legal agreements, including contracts for services and commercial leases;
- assisting with legislative drafting and statutory interpretation.
The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of the legislative process and the operation of the Legislative Assembly. Good verbal and written communication skills are also assets. Ability to work in Microsoft Office is required. Remuneration is up to $33.28 per hour, and an additional 11.2% in lieu of holiday and statutory entitlements.
The position will commence May 2025 and continue until a mutually agreeable date in August 2025.

Visitor Services works to increase public awareness of and engagement with the Legislative Assembly and Alberta’s democratic system through public and education programs. We are currently seeking to hire both English-speaking and English-French bilingual Legislature Guides.
As a Legislature Guide you will be responsible for delivering structured public programs and engaging visitor experiences in the Legislature Building, Visitor Centre and on the Legislature Grounds. This includes supporting visitors in the Pehonan Theatre, Borealis Gallery, Democracy Discovery Centre and supporting sales in Capital Gifts.
In this position you will be a representative of the LAO, engaging visitors in an exceptional experience, projecting a positive, professional and nonpartisan attitude along with a commitment to providing visitor-/client-centered service.

The keys to success in this role are your interpersonal skills, presentation skills and ability to communicate to a diverse audience. You are excited about using your skills and experience to deliver programming content to visitors either as a structured public tour of the Legislature Building, a casual drop-in program for visitors outdoors or a discussion on display and exhibit materials in our Visitor Centre. Your conversational skills in English, French or other second language are excellent. Fluency and your ability to deliver programming in other languages is considered an asset.
Your ability to simplify and explain complex concepts is exceptional, and your enthusiasm is infectious.
You are able to work independently using sound judgment coupled with tact and diplomacy to solve problems, which may arise without immediate access to supervisory support.
You are also comfortable doing a generous amount of walking, climbing stairs and other physical activities when required.
Bring your excellence to the LAO
You hold a high school diploma and have at least one year of demonstrated experience in active visitor engagement, specifically public speaking, guiding public tours or school tours, tourism delivery or similar activities.
You have a knowledge of parliamentary process, the history of Alberta, tourism information and current events. You also bring familiarity with professional office practices and standard software and equipment.
You are flexible in terms of scheduling, including being available to work irregular hours as required. You are available to work Wednesday through Sunday, including statutory holidays, for approximately 30 hours per week during the summer season. This position has the potential to extend at reduced hours throughout the school year.
