The Holodomor was a Soviet government-led famine imposed on Ukraine from 1932 to 1933, that led to millions of people starving to death.
“The heinous attack on the Ukrainian people cannot be undone, but we will continue to honour their memories,” said Hon. Nathan Cooper, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. “We will look forward to a better future, filled with unity and peace for Ukraine and Ukrainian Canadians.”
The ceremony is open to the public and will feature musical performances, prayers, a candle-lighting ceremony and a poetry recitation.
Remarks will be brought by:
- Hon. Danielle Smith, Premier
- Hon. Sarah Hoffman (on behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition)
- Mr. Oleksandr Danyleiko, Consul General of Ukraine in Edmonton
- Ms. Terese Szlamp-Fryga, Vice President, Canadian Polish Congress Alberta Society
- And members of the Ukrainian and Polish community
The ceremony will be live streamed on assembly.ab.ca, the Legislative Assembly’s X (Twitter), Facebook and YouTube channels.
