Samir Kayande was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on May 29, 2023. He represents the constituency of Calgary-Elbow.
He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund.
On June 27, 2023, MLA Kayande was appointed as the Opposition Critic for Finance (Fiscal Responsibility) and Deputy Assistant Opposition Whip.
In MLA Kayande’s multi-decade career prior to running for office, he was an engineer, business consultant, energy analyst, and executive. He specialized in the economic analysis of capital assets, including nuclear power plants, wind farms, solar energy, oil sands facilities, and pipelines. In addition, he built software tools that helped institutional investors make data-driven investment decisions.
He served on the board of the Pembina Institute from 2021 to 2022. He earned a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and an MBA from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie-Mellon University.
MLA Kayande was born in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and is married with two children. His hobbies include reading, cooking, and running.
He was the 968th Member sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
